Biography

Canadian-South African cellist Luka Coetzee has quickly established herself as one of the most compelling artists of her generation. Described by Fanfare Magazine as “tonally, technically, and musically superb,” her playing is recognized for its expressive honesty, fearless virtuosity, and remarkable artistic maturity.

Raised in a musical family in Canada, Coetzee’s relationship with the cello began at the age of one, when she started playing on a viola adapted for cello playing. By the age of eleven she had already made her professional concerto debut, performing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the Calgary Civic Symphony, an early milestone that marked the beginning of a rapidly expanding international career.

Her international breakthrough came in 2023 when, at just eighteen, she became the youngest and first Canadian winner of the International Paulo Cello Competition in Helsinki, one of the most prestigious competitions for the instrument. The victory confirmed her reputation as one of the most exciting emerging voices in classical music. She is also a First Prize winner of the Pablo Casals International Award and the Johansen International Strings Competition in Washington, D.C., and received the Frans Helmerson Promotional Award from the Kronberg Academy. In 2025 she was named to CBC’s 30 Under 30, recognizing her as one of Canada’s leading young musicians.

As a soloist, Coetzee performs with orchestras across Europe, North America, and Africa. Recent seasons have included appearances with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Oulu Symphony Orchestra, Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Cannes, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, working with conductors such as Osmo Vänskä, Rumon Gamba, Tabita Berglund, Rune Bergmann, Fawzi Haimor, Jessica Cottis, Dawid Runtz, and Holly Hyun Choe.

Highlights of the 2026–2027 season include performances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Quebec Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, Orquesta de Córdoba, Kremerata Baltica, and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Recital appearances with pianist Jon Kimura Parker include Toronto’s Koerner Hall, where their performance was broadcast nationally on CBC Radio, the Vancouver Recital Society, and in recitals presented by Pro Música in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

As a recitalist and chamber musician, Coetzee has appeared at numerous international festivals. Recent festival appearances include the Festival de Pâques alongside Gidon Kremer and Mikhail Pletnev and the Pau Casals Festival in El Vendrell with Frank Braley, where her performance was broadcast on Catalunya Música. Festival appearances in 2026 include the Dresden Musikfestspiele, Brugg Festival, Festival Les Étoiles du Classique, the Paliesiaus Dvaras Festival with Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and the classicAscona Festival in Ticino. Other highlights include appearances at the Rheingau Musik Festival, Woordfees Festival in South Africa, Kimito Island Music Festival, Verbier Festival, the Peninsula Music Festival, and Festival Bach Montréal.

A significant milestone in Coetzee’s career was her debut recording with the LGT Young Soloists on Naxos, recorded at Berlin’s Teldex Studio with Grammy Award winning engineer Christoph Classen. Featuring Beethoven’s A Major Cello Sonata arranged for cello and strings, the album received widespread international acclaim and reached No. 1 on the Apple Music Classical charts in more than 40 countries. Critics praised the recording enthusiastically, with Fanfare Magazine describing her playing as possessing “joy, freshness, poise, clarity and naturalness,” calling it “playing of rare quality…close to perfection.” The American Record Guide commended her “fine tone and expressive power,” while Gramophone described her as “a joy to hear.”

Coetzee’s artistic development has been shaped through studies and mentorship with some of the leading musicians of our time. She was mentored by Christine Bootland, John Kadz and Horacio Contreras and studied at the Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary. She also earned ARCT diplomas in both cello and piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto. She is currently being mentored by Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Kronberg Academy in Germany, supported by the Casals Patronage, and has also received support from the Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund.

Beyond the concert stage, Coetzee is deeply committed to sharing music with wider communities. As Calgary Regional Director of the Back to BACH Project, she has led initiatives bringing live classical music and interactive educational programs to schools and communities with limited access to the arts. Inspired by the humanitarian legacy of Pau Casals, she believes strongly in music’s power to connect people and enrich society.

Luka Coetzee is represented worldwide by Sheldon Artists and in Spain and Portugal by Agencia Camera. She plays on a c. 1712–15 Giuseppe Guarneri “filius Andrea” cello, with a bow by François Nicolas Voirin, both graciously provided by Canimex Inc., Drummondville, Québec, Canada. Luka is a Violin Channel Artist and an Endorsing Artist for Thomastik-Infeld strings (Vienna).
